Horizontal dipoles have considerable advantages in RF reception compared to vertical antennas emerging from the physics of wave propagation in this frequency range.

Active Dipoles Horizontally Polarized

Noise emerging near the antenna (e.g. man-made noise) reaches the reception position as predominant vertical polarized ground wave. Since for space wave propagation over short distances only a small frequency range can be used where atmospheric noise prevails.

Because of its vertical radiation diagram as well as the decoupling a horizontal dipole is largely insensitive to this ground wave. Assuming reception under flat angle the atmospheric noises are faded out through the slight sensitivity of horizontal dipoles at lower frequencies.

Compared to a vertical antenna only a minimum of noise is received causing an improvement of SNR for medium distances specially.
